Micah and Christine

plus three

This last weekend we took a break from adventures and sightseeing. I had projects due in my two summer courses, so that took priority. Micah took Charlotte to the park and I went to the library to do my work.

Charlotte at the park with Daddy

I was able to complete my work, and I am proud to announce that I got my grades today.

Woohoo!

Also today I found out that they have listed my job on the college website. Two weeks ago I resigned from my position as a full-time developmental math instructor at Central Carolina Community College. I have accepted a position at N. C. State as a research assistant for next year!

That means I will get to work on my PhD and do research full-time. It also means that my schedule will be significantly more flexible than last year. I will be working from home most of the time, and Micah and I plan to still take turns watching Charlotte so that we do not have to put her in childcare. This will be a huge change for our family, and I am excited about the opportunity!

Finally, a while ago Intel had requested that Micah submit a paper on his work to them. We just found out that it has been published! You can check it out here. Very proud of my husband!

A post with Charlotte updates is coming soon!

Oh, my sweet kitchen
You have served us faithfully
I miss you dearly

The night before last my husband used a (very dull) kitchen knife to open this can of beans for our dinner burritos.

What a man!

I miss my home, especially when I am cooking. Our kitchen in North Carolina is really nice- by far the nicest kitchen I have had in my life. I think I have been a little spoiled by it, because when I cook in this kitchen in San Francisco I find myself daydreaming about my kitchen back home.

The other day Micah said, "I miss our counters." This came as no surprise to me, and I was thinking of all that prep space I have back home when I asked him why he missed them. His response? "Because they're beautiful."

So, to end my moaning about missing my kitchen, I will just make a list of all the things I miss, in no particular order.
  1. Nice knives. Sawing one's way through a tomato is not fun.
  2. A pretty view out my window when washing dishes. I miss spying on all of our older neighbors walking their dogs.
  3. On the subject of dishes: Having a dishwasher. So, I hate my dishwasher. It was way too much money for something that doesn't work well, but I love having a dishwasher.
  4. My oven. I felt like I knew what I was doing with it. The one here is gas. Cooking with gas is not as hard as I had feared, but I still don't feel confident.
  5. Cups. I think we have five cups here, and that includes two beer steins, a mug, and a wine goblet.
  6. Spices. We bought the basics when we came here, but did not invest in the full array sitting in my cabinet back home.
  7. Ample counterspace for making meals.
  8. My aprons and oven mitts, 'cause they're cute.
  9. Can opener, pizza cutter, food processor, mixer, just about any type of cooking gadget...
  10. Being able to cook in the kitchen and talk with Micah working on his computer in the office. This is more a function of Micah working a forty-hour a week job than anything else, but I still miss it.
Okay, I've had my little whine and I'm done now. :) It's really not so bad cooking here, it just makes me appreciate home and look forward to being back there.

I am still unsure about a lot of things in Charlotte's room. We don't know what we're going to use for her bed, or what dressers or other furniture we're going to have.

In her room right now, we have this dresser from Ikea. There are several things I like about the dresser:
  1. Purchased from Craig's List for cheap, without the need to put it together.
  2. Cute style.
  3. Excellent height to use with a changing pad on top, which is what we have been doing.
  4. Wide enough to also place her wipes warmer on the top of the dresser.

Hemnes 8 drawer dresser, white

Even with all of those good things, one bad thing trumps all of them. The quality is pretty bad. The drawer bottoms are fiberboard, and several of the drawers bow when I put stuff in there- especially her drawer with her cloth diapers.

So, I'm considering selling this dresser on Craig's List. I would anticipate getting about the same amount for it that I paid, which is not too bad for a year's use. Then I might buy another dresser. I might even try to paint that dresser. But I'm kind of scared. What if it looks horrible? I've never done one before.

So instead of focusing on the things I don't know about her room, I thought I'd switch to what I want for her room. My plan is to do this room re-design as cheaply as possible.

I already have these adorable wall cards from eeBoo:

Alphabet and Number cards

I am hoping to take the colors from the box of the alphabet cards. I like the light purple, dark purple, and red combination. Here's a close-up of the box, though it's kind of hard to see the colors:

These were a gift from my Mother in Law long before we were expecting Charlotte.

After looking around for pictures of these cards, I found out
that other people used this same color scheme with these cards.

So I'm planning on doing her wall color in that lavender color you see on the top of the picture above. I want to be really careful with the paint color, as it is important to me that it not look pink-y. (Don't get me wrong, I like pink. A lot. As in, my wedding colors were pink and gold.) It's just that I want the purple and red look for this room. I am hoping to re-use the red curtains from our guest room in her room.

I was thinking I would just put the cards up along the top of the walls of her room like a border, until one day when I was searching Etsy while pregnant. I was looking for mobiles, but stumbled upon this seller. Now I'm pretty convinced I want to put the cards up like that- so cute!

sweet

:)

I like the pinwheel mobiles, too. I think I might have to try to make one- they are so cute and seem like they wouldn't be too hard.

We ate at Goat Hill Pizza for dinner. It's within walking distance and Christine heard good things about it, so we came for Neighborhood Night. Every Monday, they have all you can eat pizza for about $10. There's also a small salad bar.

It was absolutely packed. There were people waiting outside to get in! Inside, people were packed around every table and the restaurant was noisy with talking and laughing. Even in all the chaos, the waiters were friendly and fast. We had great service.

The waiters carry pizza around to the tables, announcing what they have on their tray. The slices are pretty small, but with so much to try, it works out great. Hawaiian, spinach+tomato+feta, goat cheese+tomato+pesto, and chicken+red onion+garlic sauce are just a few we were offered. The toppings were tasty and juicy over a very crunchy crust.

A fun place with great atmosphere and good food!
