Micah and Christine

plus three
January 10, 2011 by Christine
I am listening to the pitter patter of sleet hitting our skylight. My evening class was cancelled today, which meant that I gained a couple of hours of time. What a cool present! Don't you love getting TIME when you least expect it? What have I done with my time?

  • Shopped at Target. I picked up a few little things on sale for a couple of friends having little boys soon.  Also, after taking one last look at the secondhand shops, I purchased a booster seat. I found this one. The colors kind of go with our dining room, so that's a plus.
  • Wrote a post about our dining area...

This is our dining area. On the far right of the shot you can see part of the kitchen counters. The space is small and we've been trying to figure out what to do with it.
There are lots of things that I like about the space. You can see the 18" travertine tiles that we got for a steal at Home Depot. I also really like the hanging pendant light fixture that we got on mega-clearance at Lowe's. The dining table and chairs is from a furniture event at World Market, and the stools are from World Market clearance, too.

Here's what I don't like: The big pile of clutter on the right side of the above picture- that's our recycling, which has really piled up this week. And then here's the biggie: the bookshelves. Neither of us really likes the bookshelves, but the reality is we have TONS of books and not a lot of space. The bookshelves have been a sort of necessary evil.

Here's another view of the dining room, looking in from the kitchen:
Eek! Book clutter! And, is that a leafblower hiding behind that tall bookshelf? Totally is.

Micah and I have been looking for a buffet to put on that far wall of our dining area for about 3 years now. Really. The problem is that we are cheap. Yesterday I found one on Craigslist that I think might work.
Simple, modern, and tons of storage space. We want the buffet as extra storage in our little house, so we'll likely use it for tool storage. The problem is, it's huge. With the Vibe currently out of commission, we have no way of picking it up.

Well let's just assume for a moment that we did a buffet on that far wall. How to decorate? The first year Micah and I moved to NC we saw a painting that was exquisite. I wish that I had a picture of it- it was a painting of koi pond goldfish. It was so bright and vibrant and in motion! But at $4,000, totally out of our price range. If I'm ever rich I would LOVE to purchase artwork. But for now, here are a few things I saw at Homegoods:
In the first picture I like the colors, and like the idea of tiling multiple pieces. Not crazy about these two, though. The second picture is ok, but not great. I also don't think I like the vertical painting for this wall.
Both of these have potential. I like the whimsy of the first picture. The reds tie into the colors in the kitchen and dining area, and the other colors coordinate with the rest of the house. I like the second picture because of the colors and because it reminds me of a painting my Father in Law did for us.

I also have this sort of strange, half-formed idea that I would skip the artwork all together and hang three of these curtains on the far wall:
I would want for them to be centered on the buffet. The trick would be that in my mind's eye, their tops would be cut so that they went along with the angled ceiling line:
Phew! Enough rambling. Thanks for letting me think aloud about these pressing decorating matters. :)
