Micah and Christine

plus three
August 26, 2010 by Micah

To celebrate our anniversary, Christine and I had dinner at the Fearrington House. This is a very fancy restaurant located in our neighborhood. We have been looking forward to visiting for years, and finally had the chance.

We got all dressed up and went on our first date in ages. We both splurged and got four courses. Of course, everything was very good.

Here's what Christine had:

Salad Of Baby Beets with Sherry Poached Pears
Green Beans, Patty Pan Squash, Sliver Queen Corn

Country Ham Agnolotti with Pickled Watermelon Dressing
Collard Greens, Corn, Parmesan

Olive Oil Poached Salmon with Mustard & Dill Ravioli
Sea Beans, Lentils, Eggplant, Port & Red Wine Sauce

Hot Chocolate Soufflé
Hot Chocolate Sauce, Whipped Cream

Christine's thoughts:

Oh-so-tasty. When we go to fancy restaurants (not often!) I am always amazed at the combinations of flavors the chefs come up with. Beets and Pears? Though I am not normally a big beet fan, that starter was so yummy. The Agnolotti had some foamy stuff on it that looked funny and gave an almost tickly sensation in the mouth. The salmon was beyond phenomenal. The flavor was quite good, and the texture was perfect- unlike any salmon I had ever had before. To end the evening I had the souffle, which is the one item that has been on the restaurant's menu since it opened 30 years ago. It was everything a chocolate lover would dream.

And beyond the food for a moment: Yes, we took pictures of our food. Yes, the waiters laughed at us. But as you might know by now, we document our food indulgences!

Back to Micah...

My choices:

Beef Carpaccio with Pesto Crème Fraîche & Crispy Shallots
Tomatoes, Zucchini, Olives, Pine Nuts

Seared Foie Gras with English Ginger Cake
Peach, Sherry, Red Pearl Onion, Pistachio

Roast Rabbit Loin with Truffle, Tarragon Mousse and Porcini Linguini
Bacon, Silver Queen Corn, Pencil Leeks, Chanterelles

"Arctic Roll" with Peach Sorbet
Almond, Vanilla, Raspberry, Lemon Basil

The beef carpaccio tasted like prosciutto to me, but combined with the creamy pesto was unlike anything I have had before. The most stunning part of my meal was the Foie Gras. To my naive tongue, it tasted similar to butter with a meat flavor- smooth, rich, and absolutely delicious. Like the carpaccio, the rabbit was not exciting by itself. However, when combined with the mousse and mushrooms, it was fantastic. The arctic roll was the least exciting, since the flavors were familiar, but it was a refreshing finish to the meal.
