Micah and Christine

plus three

Last Saturday (July 17) we headed off on our second day of vacation in San Francisco! We started out the day by grabbing a bus over to the Museum of Modern Art. It had been a while since either Micah or I had been to an art museum, and it was Charlotte’s first art museum!

Modern art is not my favorite, but there were definitely some interesting pieces.

This was a giant tapestry! The second picture is a close-up of the fabric.

A painting and some chairs.

Where's Waldo?

One of the highlights of the museum visit was watching Micah show Charlotte all of the colorful artwork.

After we finished the museum, we walked over to see Union Square. Union Square is a big shopping district and supposedly well-known. We quickly moved on to Chinatown.

Chinatown was busy and fun. There were tons of shops with cheap, random Chinese trinkets. Exhausted and hungry, we chose the nearest sitdown restaurant we could find so that Charlotte would have a highchair. The food was just ok. I decided to try lemon chicken, since I had never heard of it. It wound up being a fried piece of chicken with what seemed like lemon pie filling on top. Weird. Another highlight of that restaurant: changing Charlotte on the floor in a random back staircase of the restaurant.

Moving on to the rest of Chinatown. We spent some time browsing shops, then wandered some back alleys. The alleys were really neat- a break from the hustle bustle of tourists on the main drag, and very quaint. We decided that we wanted dessert, so I headed over to a street vendor to find something. The woman spoke almost no English, making it very difficult to figure out what I was purchasing. I wound up with a big piece of spongecake for $1.50.

Then we headed to another vendor. I bought a green tea pound cake, and Micah bought a “wifecake.” These cost another $3. Needing a place to eat,  we headed over to a little park. The park was FULL of Chinese adults playing cards and chess. We sat down on a bench and ate our treats.

Next we caught a bus back to Pier 39. Going to the Aquarium of the Bay was on Micah’s list of things that he wanted to do while in San Francisco, so we were hoping they actually had the lights on.

There were some neat animals there, but it was a little disappointing. Still, Micah got some good pictures.

By the time we were leaving the aquarium, we were pretty tired. We walked back along Fisherman’s Wharf, taking in a few sights as we did. We stopped at Boudin for a sandwich on sourdough bread, even though we were getting really cold at this point.
In the picture with the Boudin sign, you can see the wire basket system that
they use to transport the freshly baked sourdough bread around the building.

Remember how we had that dark chocolate sundae the day before? That Ghirardelli shop is conveniently located right across the street from the bus stop we needed. So we ended the day with a Ghirardelli hot chocolate. Yummmmm... Tired and happy, we took the bus home. One more day of adventure ahead!

Night-night, Charlotte!
