We have been doing fun stuff with Sarah and Jeremy and Caden for the past few days. So, of course I am going to post about a restaurant Micah and I went to weeks ago. If you want to know about the fun stuff we've been up to, you can visit Sarah's blog.
Our friend Anish told us that this restaurant was good. He was particularly impressed that they served a specific South Indian dish that is difficult to find in Chapel Hill. When we went to the restaurant we brought Anish along to translate the menu for us.
We started out the meal by splitting a mango lassi. It was quite tasty. Though, mango lassi is easy to make! I made my own a couple of months ago from this recipe using my magic blender. I LOVE 4-ingredient 5-minute desserts.
We ordered three different lunch entrees to share. The first was a tandoori chicken salad. It was fine, but nothing too special. Also not authentic Indian... tailored to people who don't really care for Indian food. From Vimala's lunch menu, "Tandoori Chicken Local organic chicken, marinated in Vimala’s tandoori masala and Mapleview yogurt, grilled. Served over salad. Gluten free. $8"
Next up, masala dosa. This is the dish that's hard to get... and it was GREAT.
"Masala Dosa Rice and urad dal fermented into batter and poured into a thin crêpe. With sambaar, coconut chutney and a potato bhaji on the side. Kerala and Tamil Nadu favorite. Gluten free & vegan. $7"
Finally, we got the chole bhatura plate. I really really loved this. The chickpea dish (the chole) was very flavorful, and the bread (the bhatura) was tasty. "Chole Bhatura Plate Slow simmered chickpea curry with tamarind date chutney, cilantro mint chutney, tomatoes, onions, and cilantro, served with bhatura. Our bhatura is made with Lindley Mills organic flour and Mapleview yogurt, puffed into a balloon. Punjabi dhaaba classic. $7"
So, Vimala's was a hit. The lunch prices were very reasonable, especially considering that they buy all of their food locally and often organic. We'll return!
