The time has come for us to decide whether or not we want to renew our annual membership to Durham's Museum of Life and Science. I talked about our first visit here and I first talked about getting our $85 annual membership fee here.
Since we are up for renewal, we considered how we had used the membership this past year. In addition to visiting our home museum, we have also taken advantage of the reciprocal agreement shared by all of the museums in the Association of Science-Technology Centers* shown on this list. Over the course of the past year we have gone to the following museums with our membership:
Museum of Life and Science (our home museum)
5 visits (or even more! Didn't keep track.)
2 adult admissions per visit
Estimated value: $129. 50
Exploratorium (visited while living in San Francisco last summer)
2 visits
2 adult admissions per visit
Estimated value: $60.00
Zeum (Also while living in San Francisco)
1 visit
2 adult admissions
Estimated value: $20.00
Terre Haute Children's Museum (in my hometown)
2 visits
2 adult admissions per visit
Estimated value: $28.00
Discovery Place (mini-vacation to Charlotte, NC)
1 visit
2 adult admissions
Estimated value: $24.00
WonderLab (visiting friends in Bloomington)
1 visit
2 adult admissions
Estimated value: $14.00
Overall estimated value: $275.50
Of course, it is unfair to go by these numbers alone. While visiting these museums, we often ate out or indulged in the occasional carousel ride...
Still, visiting science museums is an activity that our entire family truly enjoys. We have decided that an annual fee of $90** is a worthwhile expense for all of the fun we have.

*There are other museum alliances, notably the Association of Children's Museums.
**Annual membership fee has increased from $85 to $90.
